Meet Our People: Jack Appleton BIM Project Lead

Having joined Plowman Craven in early 2020 as part of the BIM Consultancy Team, Jack is now responsible for the production and delivery of a wide range of Scan-to-BIM projects.
So, what exactly do you do?

My role can vary week by week, sometimes even day by day. I’m usually focusing on one of the Scan-to-BIM projects that I’m leading. This could be the initial project setup, briefing the modelling team, undertaking some quality auditing of the model(s), getting stuck in to the modelling works myself or preparing models for issue.

Do you work with a specialist team?

I work with the BIM team at Plowman Craven, where we regularly have the need to adapt our processes to align with specific client requirements as the intended use of our deliverables is not always the same. Projects that are slightly adrift from the “norm” can be very engaging as we often use additional software or tools, such as Dynamo (for Revit), to ensure large quantities of data are efficiently/accurately handled and presented.

What does a typical day look like?

Every day we have a morning meeting within the BIM team to discuss our current projects and then we crack on! In the afternoon we have another team meeting to discuss any lessons learnt, development ideas or any other topics that are beneficial in discussing/sharing.

What are the most important attributes for the role?

Being communicative, clear, consistent, good with time management and open to sharing problems and successes to benefit the rest of the team.

What do you love about your job?

I enjoy leading Scan-to-BIM projects as the buildings/sites vary so much. No project is ever the same.

Similarly, I very much enjoy the Construction Verification projects I lead as the approach can also vary for each project here too. It’s all about finding the best/most efficient approach whilst providing a clear deliverable for the client.

Being a bit of a Dynamo-geek myself, I’m always getting stuck into some visual programming to build new workflows that are out of reach for Revit by default.

Best thing about working for Plowman Craven?

The people and the variety of work!

Favourite quote or saying?

We can probably do this better with Dynamo……. (any excuse).

Any sports and hobbies outside of work?

When I’m not injured in one way or another I like to regularly train at the gym, so usually about 5 days each year. I also enjoy a few games of pool at the weekend with mates; can I class that as a “sport”?
