Plowman Craven reaffirms its commitment to Building Information Modelling (BIM)

Andy McKayPlowman Craven is pleased to announce the appointment of its new BIM Technical Specialist. Andy McKay (pictured right) joined the business on 1st November and his appointment reinforces the organisation's commitment to the provision of As-Built Surveying Solutions for Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Management purposes.

Andy has worked within the Architecture industry and the BIM environment for the past 8 years from both a supplier and a client perspective and his role at Plowman Craven will focus on maximising the companys' ability to deliver and manage projects using platforms such as Revit.

Andy was first exposed to Revit at his first job in Australia where it was a fairly new product to the mass market. He says, "I was hooked immediately and have since been a huge advocate for it. BIM was still a relatively new concept in the UK when I arrived four years ago, but in the past eighteen months it has taken off in a very big way. I believe we are now at the stage that if you work in the built environment and are not adapting to the BIM environment, you will be left behind!"

"I joined Plowman Craven knowing it has a very large part to play in the true BIM lifecycle. BIM is so much more than just modelling and coordinating in 3D, it's a complete process that should last throughout the life of the building." Plowman Craven is at the start of this process to survey and deliver an as-built model, but most importantly, it is able to manage the model and all the information within it as it evolves throughout the building's life. I believe this is where BIM really plays its role in building management, resulting in huge time and cost savings.

Peter Folwell, Business Development Director at Plowman Craven says, "Measurement surveyors are key in providing the 'Information' in Building Information Management and with Andy on board our clients can be confident in our ability to deliver 'information' to their exact requirements"

Plowman Craven is a leading Chartered Surveying company offering a broad range of professional measurement services. Its extensive services cover numerous markets including rail, urban regeneration, retail, commercial property, government, public bodies, police and entertainment.

Already a proven leader in innovation, Plowman Craven has now procured one of the UK's first Leica HDS7000 ultra high speed scanner to ensure the best combination of speed and accuracy for its measurement survey solutions.

With scanning speeds of up to one million points per second and an extended range of over 100 meters, the HDS7000 is claimed to have the best combination of high efficiency, accuracy and low scan noise at longer ranges.

David Norris, Technical Director at Plowman Craven says, "The addition of the HDS7000 to our existing range of scanning equipment gives us the versatility to take on any challenge. The phase-based scanner performs at very high speeds and the range and the quality of data is superb. The investment proves Plowman Craven's ongoing commitment to investing in new technology and innovation."

He continues, "We are currently working on a number of high profile infrastructure projects such as London Bridge Station and Crossrail, and we also have a significant workload in scanning for the film and entertainment sector. Within the property market, our clients are moving towards a Building Information Management environment, and this investment will further improve and refine our scan-to-BIM workflows."

Tim Badley, HDS Sales Manager, Leica Geosystems comments, "Plowman Craven continues to strive forward pushing the boundaries of 3D data capture. They were amongst the very first to fully embrace 3D laser scanning technology back in the early 2000's and this purchase reaffirms the company's position as leaders in this field. With the launch of the HDS7000 we have combined ultra high speed and high density data capture, with increased accuracy up to 187m – perfect for many of the complex projects undertaken by PCL."

Plowman Craven supports Red Bull Flugtag 2011

The Red Bull Flugtag challenges the brave and brainy to design, build and pilot home-made flying machines off a 30-foot high flight deck into the water below. Plowman Craven surveyors took an active role in the event by measuring the distance reached by each of the teams daring to take part. Jonathan Fletcher and Craig Papachrisostomou braved the weather on the day to provide immediate distance measurements to the Flugtag organisers.

This year's event took place at the Roundhay Park in Leeds on 17th July. The teams were judged on three criteria: flight distance, creativity of the craft, and showmanship and eventual winners on the day were Infinity and the Pond.

Matt WestAfter many months of research and product trials, the Plowman Craven Underground Utilities team has invested in and taken delivery of its newest piece of survey equipment - the Detector Duo Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Manufactured in Italy by Ingegneria Dei Sistemi SpA (IDS), the equipment, originally developed for the Italian military, will extend the organisations ability to accurately locate buried services and other sub-surface structures.

Matt West, Principal Surveyor in our Underground Utilities team (pictured centre), says:

"The new GPR will not replace any of our existing equipment. It will serve to enhance our existing tracing capabilities and once again proves Plowman Craven's ongoing commitment to investing in new technology and innovation."
